The area on the east side of Daisetsuzan National Park is referred to as Higashi Daisetsu (literally east Daisetsu). The main peak in the area is Mt.Ishikaridake, and the area includes Lake Shikaribetsu and Lake Nukabira. Mountains are steep here, swathed in vast, dense forests.
The area’s early modern industrial heritage remains here in the form of numerous concrete arch bridges of the former Japan National Railways (JNR) Shihoro line. These tell the history of the pioneer lumber industry that once flourished in the area.
The park is accessible by bus from Obihiro Station or Shintoku, or by bus from Sounkyo to Obihiro.
